THE average Brit scoffs an amazing 3,450 calories a DAY, according to new research the equivalent of SEVEN Big Macs.
The Government recommends that women eat only 2,000 calories a day and men 2,500, which means we are eating far more than we should. And we are not alone. In Austria, the average calorie consumption is 3,800 a day. In Greece it is 3,710. And Belgians put away a hefty 3,690 calories. And our health is suffering.
Sun nutritionist Amanda Ursell says we need to learn to control our portion sizes. She says: “The problem comes because we almost always eat the portions that we are served.
“For example, it only takes a few hundred extra calories here and there over the course of a typical day to gradually build up and trigger a gain in weight.
“An extra 200 calories a day over a year will lead to an excess of 73,000 calories. This equates to a weight gain of around 1st 5lb.”
