叶女士在大学求学期间就曾先后担任过中国台湾、日本著名的电台、电视台记者。七十年代初期，她加入美国政府外交部门，先后担任美国驻缅甸大使馆和美国驻香港总领事馆政治处官员。1982年，叶女士加入美国商务部，先后在广州担任商务领事和在香港担任商务署署长，在台北担任美国在台协会商务组组长。1995年她出任美国驻华使馆公使衔商务参赞，她是第一位也是到目前为止唯一担任过这个职位的女性。
Ms. Yeh joined the U.S. Government in early 1970s, following a career in Taiwan and Japan as a radio and television journalist, and served as a Political Officer with the U.S. Embassy in Burma, and later with the U.S. Consulate General in Hong Kong. In 1982, Ms. Yeh joined the U.S. Foreign Commercial Service and served as the Commercial Counsel / Commercial Director in Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Taipei. In 1995, she was appointed as the Minister-Counselor for Commercial Affairs in the U.S. Embassy in Beijing. She is the first and the only woman to hold that position.
